Frequently Asked Questions

General

How much does Edge Bookkeeping charge?

See our Packages for monthly pricing. We also offer hourly rates for special projects and additional clean-up or catch-up work.

If you would like to know more about pricing please contact us to discuss this further.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No long-term contract is required. You’re not locked into working with Edge Bookkeeping for any set period of time. We believe our service should earn your business each month.

For liability and professional standards, we do require a service agreement to be signed before work begins. This agreement outlines responsibilities, confidentiality, and scope of work—but it does not commit you to a long-term relationship. If you ever decide to move on, you’re free to do so.

Do you work with QuickBooks?

Yes, we currently use QuickBooks Online as well as Sage 50. A monthly QuickBooks or Sage 50 subscription fee will be the responsibility of the customer.

What counts as a transaction?

A transaction is any individual bank or credit card line item that requires review, categorization, or reconciliation.

This includes customer payments & deposits, purchases & expenses, bank fees & interest, GST adjustments, transfers between accounts. Things that DO NOT increase transaction count: reconciliations and reporting.

If your transaction volume consistently exceeds your package limit, we’ll recommend moving to a package that better fits your business.

What if my books are behind?

You’re not alone — many small business owners fall behind on their bookkeeping at some point. We offer judgment-free bookkeeping cleanup, completed remotely, to catch up and correct your books so they’re accurate and ready to move forward.

Timelines depend on how far behind the books are, but many cleanups take a few hours for a couple of months behind, several days for 6–12 months, and longer projects are handled in clear, manageable phases.

Is Artificial Intelligence Safe for Bookkeeping?

Yes — when used properly, AI is safe for bookkeeping.

AI tools used in bookkeeping software follow strict security standards, including encryption and secure data storage. However, AI does not work independently. A professional bookkeeper reviews all entries, confirms accuracy, applies tax rules correctly, and protects sensitive financial information.

For most BC small businesses, the safest approach is a combination of modern tools and experienced bookkeeping support.

Bookkeeping Questions

Do I need to charge GST?

In British Columbia, you must charge GST (5%) once your business is required to register for GST. You must register for GST if:

You earn more than $30,000 in taxable revenue over any 12-month period. You can voluntarily register before the threshold is met.

Bookkeeper vs Accountant?

Bookkeepers are able to offer more cost-effective services for routine bookkeeping, and can prepare your financials for an accountant at year end. Bookkeepers are often more accessible for ongoing questions about transactions, and can keep your books up-to-date and organized in anticipation of the year-end hand off to an accountant.

How often should my books be updated?

Most businesses benefit from monthly bookkeeping to stay accurate and CRA-ready.  Staying on top of bookkeeping daily or weekly means clean, current records and no stressful clean-up later.

What is a T4A?

A T4A slip is used to report certain types of payments your business made to non-employees, such as independent contractors, freelancers, or consultants. These payments are reported to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and to the recipient.
